About Dr Edgar

Dr Jason Edgar is a Pulmonologist and Specialist Physician with a special interest in interventional pulmonology, including bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, and chest ultrasonography with ultrasound guided biopsies.

A love of animals and nature piqued an early interest in biology and veterinary science, but the prospect of helping people won out and, after matriculating he went on to earn his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBCh) with distinction from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits).

After a two-year internship at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto, he completed his year’s community service as a medical officer at Themba Secondary Hospital in Kabokweni, Mpumalanga in the HIV and TB specialist unit, with after-hours work in the internal medicine unit.

The following year saw a return to Baragwanath Hospital where, as medical officer, he spent four months in a general medical unit and two months in the infectious disease subspecialty. This hospital, the largest in Africa, was also his home base where he served as a Medical Registrar, with rotations between Helen Joseph Hospital, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, and Tshepong Hospital.

After completing his Master of Medicine (MMed) from Wits, he took up a pulmonology fellowship and specialist physician post through Wits University, working in the pulmonology and intensive care units at Charlotte Maxeke JHB Academic, Helen Joseph, Sebokeng and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic hospitals. He also obtained a sub-specialist Certificate in Pulmonology (Phys) from the College of Medicine SA.

His last post prior to joining at Mediclinic Milnerton was in the department of Internal Medicine as a Pulmonologist and Specialist Physician at Tambo Memorial Hospital in the east rand of Gauteng.

Now based at Mediclinic Milnerton, Dr Edgar relishes the opportunity to offer his experience and specialist pulmonology skills to residents of Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs, West Coast and further afield. With these services in particular demand due to Covid-19, he is excited at the prospect of bringing the latest technology and breakthroughs in this rapidly advancing field to the practice.
